More crime in Trinidad. What sucks is it is supposed to be one of the safe areas (Movie Towne) and the whole concept of Gang related Drive By's is new to Trinidad. And I was there when it happened ... I always near the shit somehow. I had just finished a birthday dinner (yes I older - thank you, thank you) and had met some friends at the local pub there in Movie Towne. Wasn't there 10 minutes when shots were heard by the crowd (it's an outdoor pub, but sandwiched in between 2 buildings). Workers and pedestrians started running towards us from the parking lot, hugging the side of the building and screaming and crying. One girl dead, 2 guys shot up, one may or may not survive. My car was parked right in front of the girl, so I had to walk by the body in order to leave. It was unsettling and all in all sort of a fuc*ed up end to a nice birthday. Maybe someday I'll understand the concept of crime and violence - but I just don't really see the profit in it all at the moment.

info from another local paper - I swear this is not a banana republic:

He said while Government is not particularly happy with the level of crime in T&T, such as the MovieTowne shooting, it does not really involve the average citizen.

"That internecine warfare that is taking place among a certain group in T&T, the average citizen is not involved in that and is not threatened directly by that," he said.

Manning admitted, however, that: "Of course, you can always have collateral damage - unusual incidents - where persons may be at risk."

Pressed on the problem, he added: "The levels of crime in T&T is a concern to the Government and the Government is determined to do whatever it can to ensure citizens enjoy significantly improved levels of security. Having said that, I wish to make it very clear Government is careful not to interfere in the work of the police. Police work is police work."::

Okay, on to less depressing stuff. I spent this past weekend in Tobago. (it was a long weekend here). I added a couple days and made a real long weekend - 5 days. I stayed at my Aunt & uncle's villa - check it out. Click the photos button at top and then hit Tobago for general images of the smaller island. ::

Despite my rush to escape, I will miss Trinidad when it is time to leave... ::

Beautiful sunsets in the East...
